Being a wife and mama is totally a full-time job in and of itself. It's a special calling we ladies get to fulfill, and it's such a privilege and blessing to be the ones who get to pour the best of ourselves into nurturing and caring for our dear ones.
That being said, the job description definitely comes with lots of challenges to overcome on a daily basis! Sleep, privacy and sanity are just a few of the things we mamas often sacrifice ;) There are lots of hats to cycle through on any given day!
Adding "business owner" to our resumés adds a whole new level of responsibility and challenges to the mix, and if we're not careful and intentional about how we spend our time, our lives and business can get out of whack in a hurry.
As a wife, mom and business owner myself, I've had to learn some strategies over the years in order to set myself, my family and my business up for success so we can all thrive. Here are just a handful of the strategies I've found really help me balance business and motherhood without completely losing it ;)
1. Separate family time from work time
This is a big one, y'all. As a self-employed business owner who sets their own schedule, and maybe works a good deal from home, it can be real easy to blur the lines between family time and work time. There's lots of opportunity for overlap - which can be both a blessing and a curse!
I have found that it's super important to set regular business hours - those times when you be strictly available for work - and stick to them! When business hours are over for the day, it's time to clock out. And when it's time for you to show up and work, communicate that respectfully to your friends and family.
2. Plan for success
I am a big advocate for taking time every Sunday to plan out the upcoming week (Google calendar is A-MAZING!) Doing this helps you and your family know what to expect so you're not flying by the seat of your pants. If you need to make adjustments, that's totally fine! But knowing in advance what you need to do and where you need to be allows you to be proactive about how and where you're spending your time. Balance is all about where YOU choose to give yourself.
3. Carve out special time with your spouse & kids
When you know there is a busy week or season coming up on the calendar, make a point to schedule in special "date" times with your hubby and with your kids. Doing this ensures you're keeping your priorities in line, and gives you all something to look forward to! It can help improve everyone's attitudes during those busy times and helps everyone stay connected with each other.
4. Don't forget to be YOU
It's so easy to get totally hung up on what other mamas are doing. For you, your family and your business to thrive, you've got to find what works best for you and your family and STOP worrying about what everyone else is doing! You do you, boo boo ;) Own it and make it work.
5. Pray, pray, pray
Y'all know I love me some Jesus! I am constantly praying for balance in my life and asking Him to guide every step I take. I'm okay with Him giving me a little kick in the pants if I have been neglectful in an important area of my life. If anything, I welcome it! He will always be faithful to lead us in the direction that's best for us, best for our families and best for our businesses!
At the end of the day, balance is much less a destination and way more the sum of our daily choices. I hope sharing these tips has encouraged you to get intentional about creating balance in your life as a wife, mom and business owner.
